"New cross-cultural research on physical discipline and child behavior problems"
Abstract: Kirby Deater-Deckard will present research from
more recent US and cross-cultural studies on the link between parental use of physical punishment and children's externalizing behavior problems. He and his team continue to find evidence of cross-cultural differences in this link. In addition, children's beliefs about the "typicality" of physical punishment and the levels of warmth in their parent-child relationships appear to operate as powerful moderators.
Bio: In addition to his position at the University of Oregon, Kirby is currently a Visiting Associate Professor at the Center for Developmental & Health Genetics, Pennsylvania State University.
